Update: You may also need to switch off “Single column view” in Opera Mini Settings.
- That’s it! Visit the Amharic KeymanWeb Mini site on your phone and start “typing”! Click “Post” to post your message to Facebook.
Using the Amharic Keyboard
This keyboard is a cutdown version of the hugely popular GFF Amharic Keyboard. Many thanks to Daniel Yacob of the Geez Frontier Foundation for originally creating this keyboard! This keyboard is designed to work intuitively with a standard (QWERTY) keyboard. This means that the Amharic sounds in this keyboard can be found by thinking of the most similar English letters.
On your mobile phone, the background English letters are hidden from the keyboard because there is not enough room to display them. But the layout remains the same.
This mobile phone keyboard supports Amharic, English and Punctuation layouts.
Some quick tips:
- Click “Sh” to access shifted letters
- On the Amharic keyboard, click “En” to access the English layout
- On the English keyboard, click “!?” to access the punctuation layout
- And when on the punctuation keyboard, click “Am” to access the Amharic layout
- The only edit function is Backspace (Bksp).
- To completely clear your text, refresh the page.
- When you are done, click Post to send your message to Facebook!
Full instructions on the Amharic keyboard can be found on the GFF Amharic keyboard help site.
